Born and raised on Kodiak Island, Alaska, Gunter spent his childhood fishing for salmon on a 42’ fishing boat with his family. As a young adult he received a scholarship to the San Francisco Art Institute where he earned a BFA in sculpture. Gunter currently resides in Port Townsend, Washington, with his wife and two children. He works full-time as a sculptor, showing his work throughout the Northwest.

My process of making sculpture relies upon setting the stage, with knowledge and experience, for useful accidents to occur. These accidents often bring the spark of life to a piece that I could not have created intentionally, but have been seeking all along. This coalescence of intention and accident is the experience that I love and the reason I make art.
